Water disinfection systems

In 2021 an experimental water disinfection system based on UV technology was installed on a water tower i Freetown, Sierra Leone having contrations of e.coli and faecal coliforms above WHO recommendations.

The UV disinfection is powered by solar cell panels, and turns on only when water is consumed. Data about functionality and water consumption is transmitted daily to the EWB Monitor database.

The disinfection technology is working fine, however so far only little water is being from the disinfection system. We are working to resolve this. The link below provides access to the raw consumption data:

The setup was developed and installed by Engineers Without Borders Denmark and the University of Southern Denmark. UV technology was donated by NatDis.
